The Big Five, Tanzania

The Big Five

Lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo, elephant.

The Big Five were named by hunters for the five most dangerous animals to pursue on foot. Today they are pursued by lenses — and Tanzania holds them all within one northern circuit.

Completing the set is less about checklist urgency than about quiet expertise: knowing which ridge leopards patrol, which crater floors hold rhino, which rivers draw buffalo herds at noon.

Highlights

  1. All five, one journey

Serengeti cats, Ngorongoro rhino, Tarangire elephants and buffalo — a natural grand slam.

  2. Spotters, not chauffeurs

Guides who read alarm calls, dust and vultures — the difference between hoping and finding.

  3. Respect built in

Observation distances that keep the five wild, healthy and unbothered.

When to go

Dry months (June–October) concentrate game predictably; resident cats remain excellent year-round.

Do you support conservation?

Park fees fund Tanzania's protection efforts; we also favour camps with credible community and conservation programmes.
